Urgent Dental Care

Split tooth, loose crown, or a tooth that won't leave you alone? Call the office and we'll look for the soonest opening.

When to seek emergency care?

A toothache usually doesn't go away for good on its own. It's often a sign of infection, and infections can spread if you wait.

Severe pain, swelling, bleeding that won't stop or an injury to the mouth means you shouldn't wait. We relieve the pain first, find the cause and explain what it will take to fix it.

What we treat when you come in with a dental emergency.

Emergency Dental Exams

We look at the tooth that's bothering you and take X-rays if they're needed. Easing your pain comes first; after that, we talk through what can be done.

Root Canal Therapy

A throbbing toothache is often a sign of infection inside the tooth, and a root canal is how it's treated. With the tooth numb, we clean the infected tissue out of the inside and seal it, and in many cases the tooth can stay.

Tooth Extractions

If there's a way to keep your tooth, that's where we start. When it can't be kept, because decay or damage has gone too far, we numb the area well and take it out. Wisdom teeth that are causing trouble are handled the same way.

We check wisdom teeth and remove them if needed

We go over replacement options, like implants

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tooth problems can't wait?

If you need care soon to stop bleeding, ease bad pain or keep from losing a tooth, treat it as an emergency. For example: a tooth knocked out in an accident, a toothache you can't bear, an abscess or a swollen face, or a tooth that's split or broken. Reading this can't take the place of a dentist checking you, so if you're unsure, give us a call.

What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?

Move fast. Hold the tooth by the crown, the part you normally see, and don't touch the root. If there's dirt on it, run it briefly under water without rubbing it. If it's a permanent, grown-up tooth, try sliding it gently back into the gap it came from. If that's not possible, put it in a small cup of milk so it doesn't dry out. A grown-up or older kid who can do it safely may hold it in their mouth next to the cheek instead. With a baby tooth, leave it out of the gap, and don't ask a small child to hold it in their mouth, since it could be swallowed. A cup of milk is the place for it. If you can't tell which kind it is, go with milk and we'll help you decide on the phone. Then phone us without waiting. Ideally, a dentist sees it within 30 minutes, but call us even if it's been longer.

I need a root canal. How much will it hurt?

With numbing, it's usually quite manageable. That ache you have now is caused by infected tissue inside the tooth. We numb the tooth with local anesthetic first, and many patients compare it to having a filling done. Clearing out the infection is what brings relief.

Can a hospital ER treat a toothache?

Usually not. A hospital ER may give you an antibiotic or something for the pain, but most have no dentist on hand, so the tooth itself doesn't get treated. A dentist can take care of the cause, for example with a root canal or by removing the tooth. If swelling is spreading, or you have a fever or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the ER or call 911 right away.

Temporary crown fell off: is that urgent?

Call us soon, and hang on to it so we can put it back on. Without it, the tooth underneath is exposed and can get sensitive. Until your visit, you can hold it on with a dab of temporary dental cement from the pharmacy, or even a little toothpaste.
